An Interview with Amanda Barrier

Signet Editor Anna Julia Vissioli Rodrigues speaks with Amanda Barrier, the director of Student Success programs here on campus.

Anna Julia: Can you introduce yourself, including your educational background, and explain your position in the Center for Student Success?

Amanda Barrier: My name is Amanda Barrier. I graduated from the University of North Carolina Wilmington in 2016. I received my master’s degree in educational administration from New Mexico State University in 2021. I am the Director of Student Success Programs, which means I oversee Subject Tutoring, Supplemental Instruction, and the Roadmap Scholars.

Anna Julia: For those who haven't had a chance to work with the tutoring center, can you explain what subject tutoring is and what it provides?

Amanda Barrier: Students can schedule an appointment or walk into the tutoring center for personalized instruction that moves at a pace best suited for the student! Our subject tutors can explain course content, work through practice problems, review material for upcoming exams, and so much more.

Anna Julia: Could you tell me a bit about your background before coming to Queens? How did you first get started in the educational and tutoring fields? Why did you decide to work as a director for subject tutoring?

Amanda Barrier: My first job out of college was as a Marketing Communications Specialist in Chapel Hill. It was a great first start, but when my husband’s job relocated us to New Mexico, I was ready for a change. I was really involved during my time at UNCW and wanted to find a career that allowed me to work with students again. I was lucky enough to get a job as a Student Success Coordinator for the College of Arts and Sciences at New Mexico State University. I have been hooked on higher education since then!

Anna Julia: How were you introduced to Queens?

Amanda Barrier: Haha, LinkedIn! I found the job posting and applied.

Anna Julia: What is your favorite part of Queens so far? Do you have any favorite eating spots yet?

Amanda Barrier: I love the location! I enjoy taking walks around campus and looking at the architecture of all the homes in the area.

Anna Julia:What would you like the future tutoring students to know about the center, tutors, and opportunities within the Center for Student Success?

Amanda Barrier: Please don’t be shy; we are here to help you! You’re welcome to schedule an appointment, but we also take walk-ins. We have so many amazing tutors that are happy to help you.

Anna Julia: What is your life like outside of Queens? Do you have any pets? Favorite shows and books to recommend to the Queen's students?

Amanda Barrier: My life outside of Queens is pretty hectic! I have a 18 month old son and three dogs that keep us on our toes. I just finished Suits, loved it!
